Broome's development a 'feather in cap' of stalwart

Nicola KalmarBroome Advertiser

A much-loved Broome stalwart enjoyed a bittersweet Anzac Day this year, which heralded his departure from Broome and the local RSL after almost 50 years.

Outgoing RSL Broome secretary Rod Hill farewelled the town about four weeks ago with his wife for a new start down south in country town Capel, but returned specially for Anzac Day.

After taking part in the Anzac dawn service, Mr Hill joined patrons at the RSL for drinks, before being awarded a special certificate by Broome Shire president

Graeme Campbell for his outstanding contribution to the community.

Mr Hill, who was secretary of RSL Broome for 44 years, will leave behind a tremendous legacy.

He was instrumental in building up the Broome branch into a thriving, successful club.

“The RSL was a little tiny complex out here so we raised money to build what we’ve got now.”

He said Broome would always have a special place for him. “This is always going to be home as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

“I got out of Vietnam and this is where I landed and this is where I’ve stayed up until three weeks ago … it’s been an absolute pleasure and to see this club grow to what it has just thrills me, I love it so much.”

Mr Hill took over as secretary of RSL Broome in 1969 and held the dual role of secretary-treasurer until about 12 years ago, remaining secretary of the branch. After 46 years of living in Broome and being an active member of the community, Mr Hill said his departure was a poignant milestone for him.

“I’ve been involved in it for so long, it’s been a part of my life, looking after the RSL and I’ve enjoyed it and loved it,” he said.

“To see it grow like it has, it’s a bit if a feather in the cap.”
