A group of Broome volunteers have won a prestigious Statewide award for their efforts in raising money for cancer research.

The committee of Broome’s Relay For Life event beat 16 other regional towns to the Mission Delivery / Fightback accolade at Cancer Council WA’s Heroes of Hope awards earlier this month.

Relay for Life is a nationwide event that encourages teams to fundraise before participating in a relay-style walk or run, challenging themselves to stay on the track overnight.

Broome hosted RFL for the first time last year, raising more than $60,000 for cancer research.

The recent award recognised the Kimberley’s event’s ability to integrate Cancer Council WA’s key messages to the community.

Broome RFL chairperson Sarah Dobson travelled to Perth for the awards ceremony, accepting the accolade from Cancer Council WA chief executive officer Susan Rooney.

Ms Dobson, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2008, has embarked on a concerted mission to fundraise through participation in RFL and other Cancer Council events.

The Broome resident said this year’s event, which is set to be hosted on September 12 and 13, was crucial in raising awareness and much-needed funds.

“I have experienced first-hand the support that Cancer Council can give - they are the leaders in research,” she said.

“One of the biggest things for me, which ties in with this award, is educating people how not to get cancer I guess – a third of cancers are preventable.

“It’s a fun weekend whilst saving lives – we just want it to be a great community event – the more people we get involved, the better it will be.”

The event starts with a survivors and carers walk, which celebrates those who have overcome cancer and the people that have supported a loved one.

Ms Dobson said that can be an emotional image, while encouraging survivors and carers to get involved this year.

She also said last year’s event was a real success, but was hoping this year would trump it.

“It had a really great vibe on the track,” Ms Dobson said.

“Everyone that was there was having a great time – there was lots of camaraderie and community spirit.

“This year there will be more entertainment and children’s activities, with more teams than last year already registered.”
