Bush plants key to cosmetics

AMY WILLIAMSBroome Advertiser

A new company with roots in Broome has set its sights on becoming an iconic Australian cosmetic brand, with products that capitalise on indigenous knowledge of native plant ingredients from the Kimberley and the South West.

Uandi Natural was established in March last year and is the result of a concept by Broome resident Kim Harris to use native ingredients and plant extracts in beauty products.

Having studied Certificate IV in western herbal medicine and bush medicine with his partner Pat Torres, Mr Harris, a Noongar Wilman man from Bunbury, said there was much to be gained from knowing about these ingredients and their benefits.

Working in Broome, he lacked time to make the business a reality without help, but two years ago, by teaming up with two young Perth-based entrepreneurs, Michael Oliver and Brack Norris, he was able to build on his dream.

Mr Oliver said after a long period of planning and development the team had three skincare products, and two more would become available in the next two months.

“We believe there is great potential for success, including by exporting our products to Asian and European markets where we believe we can become a great representation of Australian products,” he said.

“But before we do this, we are keen for strong brand recognition within Australia and build an excellent reputation based on quality and professionalism which we can use to help us export in the future.”

Mr Harris said for far too long the benefits of Australia’s native bush plants have been used and not acknowledged enough.

“Natural skin care and cosmetics products are becoming increasingly popular as people become more aware of the amazing natural benefits of many plants extracts and oils,” he said.

“Australia has so many native plants with very high levels of antioxidants which are great for the skin, and possesses a fantastic reputation globally of quality.”

Mr Harris said he was excited about the business developing and hoped it would encourage other indigenous people to step out into business ventures.

Uandi Natural is now seeking stockists in Broome and Perth. For more information about the products visit www.uandinatural.com.
