Cable Beach back on track as Bombers crash down to Earth

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Reigning West Kimberley Football League premiers Cable Beach flexed their muscles last Saturday, thumping Peninsula Bombers 28.17 (185) to 2.2 (14) in a massively one-sided encounter.

Beach rode their luck the week prior, beating Bidyadanga Emus by two points in a thrilling matchup, and were determined to set the record straight in this game.

Brett Claudius’ goal in the first 10 seconds of the game was a hint of what was to come, and Cable Beach were unrelenting in their attack in the first quarter.

A 9.4 (58) to 1.0 (6) advantage after 20 minutes came courtesy of goals from Scott Clark, Evan Russell, Sonny Dann and Brad Angus.

Bombers struggled to get out of their own half in the second quarter, with Cable Beach extending their lead further to 18.6 (114) to 1.1 (7) by half-time.

The second half was a formality, and had Cable Beach’s kicking been more accurate they could have breached the 200-point mark.

Clark ended up with five goals, while Severo Corpus added four majors. Dann, Russell and Jordan Cox all kicked three six-pointers. Albert Dolby and David Cox kicked consolation goals for the Bombers.

Cable Beach take on a rejuvenated Broome Bulls next Saturday, in what should be a test of the reigning premiers’ calibre.

President Mick Albert was pleased with the victory, but knows his side will need to lift their game against Bulls.

“We were very happy with how the boys started the game and were clinical in the early exchanges,” he said.

“Next week against Bulls will be a massive challenge however, and we will need to be at our best to get another victory.

“Both of Bulls’ forwards are playing well, and will be a handful for our backline.”
