Responsibility for hundreds of hectares of waters off Cable Beach will be shared by the Department of Transport and the Shire of Broome.

Kimberley Ports Authority has surrendered about 900 hectares from a point aligned to De Marchi Road near the Surf Lifesaving Club to just north of the rocks, where the beach access road is located.

Shire president Graeme Campbell said the boundaries and responsibilities were now clearly defined.

“What happens on the waters is the responsibility of the Department of Transport and what happens on the land to the high-water mark is the responsibility of the Shire of Broome,” he said.

Council now will now have formal jurisdiction to the area without referral to the Kimberley Ports.

Previously anything to do with trading or operating on Cable Beach had to be referred to Kimberley Ports but that will no longer be required under the changes.
