Cable Beach return to top of the ladder

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

West Kimberley Football League reigning premiers Cable Beach took advantage of a bye round for rivals Derby Tigers and Looma Eagles last Saturday, and thoroughly beat Towns to retake their place on top of the pile.

In a one-sided contest, Beach continued where they left off the week before, when they overcame Looma, and there was only ever going to be one winner here.

In the end Beach’s midfield bossed the game, with Jackson Leach, Jo Davies and Brad Angus to the fore. The victorious side’s forward line had a field day, with Scott Clark and Evan Russell kicking five goals apiece.

The score ended 25.17 (167) to 1.3 (9) in Cable Beach’s favour.

Matt Reen, Rick Nye and Joel O’Donohue were the standout players for Towns, who to their credit worked hard.

Broome Bulls’ finals hopes are in tatters after defeat in the game of the day, beaten 17.11 (113) to 10.5 (65) by a resurgent Bidyadanga Emus outfit.

Despite Bulls missing captain Tim Richter and a handful of other key men, Bidyadanga put in a highly impressive showing.

The Emus have an exciting blend of pace, power and ball skills, and their fourth win of the campaign shows the regional side have a bright future ahead.

Angelo and Aaron Thomas made the most of Richter’s absence, and dominated the midfield contests, which ultimately decided the game in Bidyadanga’s favour.

Trevor Ishiguchi continued his recent goal-haul, kicking five majors in his team’s victory. Brenton Bangu also managed four goals.

Sam La Porta, Hayden McLeod and Jeremy Hall all stepped up for Bulls, but the Broome side lost too many of their individual battles.

Bulls are now in fifth place in the standings, eight points behind Broome Saints, and their finals hopes now hang by a thread.

Saints beat a depleted Peninsula Bombers side 17.9 (111) to 7.0 (42). Coach Neil Bourke will know his team now only needs a couple more wins to secure a finals berth.

Des Headland kicked four goals for Saints, with Cornell Tolentino adding three. Reece Eades, Kevin McKenzie and Will Hunter also stood out in the win.

There is only one WKFL game this Saturday due to the Claremont Tigers vs Swan Districts colts game in Broome, but it promises to be a cracker.

A wounded Looma Eagles travel to take on heavyweights Derby Tigers, in what should be an explosive and top-quality match-up.

Looma are the only team to avoid heavy defeat at Derby Oval this season, having edged the Tigers by four points in a close game in round seven.

The hosts will be out for revenge and buoyed by their recent comprehensive victories over Cable Beach and Saints.

Looma were beaten by Cable Beach in their last outing and will know they need to be at their best in a clash that would make a fitting grand final.
