Call for Christmas carers

NICOLA KALMARBroome Advertiser

Christmas is fast approaching, but work is unlikely to slow down for Broome’s Saving Animals From Euthanasia branch, or for its carers.

While everyone is looking forward to the festive season, spare a thought for Broome’s four-legged friends.

Since establishing seven years ago, Broome SAFE has helped save the lives of hundreds of abandoned dogs and cats by its volunteers opening their hearts and homes until the animals are adopted.

The not-for-profit organisation desperately needs more volunteers, particularly at this time of the year.

Broome SAFE president Justine Sparkman said the Christmas period was quite stressful because people went out of town.

“We get more animals and we need to find carers,” she said.

“We don’t even have the ability to put them in the pet motel because they are fully booked.”

Abandoned cats and dogs picked up by shire rangers are put in the pound for 72 hours.

If owners do not come forward, the animals face euthanasia unless they can be allocated to a carer.

With less than 30 carers available, and countless pets waiting to be adopted, SAFE is in desperate need of help.

Long-term commitment is not required and volunteers can look after a pet on a shortterm, temporary basis.

“Even if it’s just looking after a pet for a couple of weeks, it really helps,” Ms Sparkman said.

Becoming a SAFE carer has been a really rewarding experience or carers. It provides a great excuse to go to the beach every day (if you’re looking after a dog), and pets make perfect companions.
