Candidates clash over election sign rules

Glenn CordingleyBroome Advertiser

Two candidates vying for the State seat of Kimberley have exchanged early verbal blows over election signs.

Greens hopeful Chris Maher has taken a shot at Liberal opponent and Shire of Broome councillor Jenny Bloom because her placard promotions do not have the required planning permission.

Mr Maher sought guidance from the council earlier this month.

Council chief executive Ken Donohoe wrote to Mr Maher confirming the shire needed planning approval for all signs and those advertisements, including election signs.

Mr Donohoe wrote that the council was developing an amendment to its local planning policy to make provisions for electoral signs.

Ms Bloom said she was at “arm’s length” from the matter because the signs were authorised by Liberal Party State director Ben Moreton.

She said it was normal electioneering, nothing unusual.

“The silly thing about all this is Mr Maher is getting me lots of free publicity,” she said.
