Cattle centre in Broome
The Nationals have made a $15 million election pledge to establish a northern beef industry development centre in Broome.
The centre will focus on areas including cattle breeding and genetics, transport and logistics, indigenous involvement in the industry and trade relationships and market access.
The Nationals would work with industry stakeholders including the WA Beef Council to design the detailed priorities of the centre.
Agriculture Minister Terry Redman said the aim of the centre was to push along new thinking for the industry in the areas of production systems, breeding and genetics and new markets.
He said indigenous involvement in the sector was significant and one of the areas that would benefit from a centre in the Kimberley devoted to the future success of the industry.
WA supplies approximately 40 per cent of Australia’s live cattle exports.
