Cattle die in Great Northern Highway truck rollover

Broome Advertiser

A number of cattle either died or had to be killed when a cattle truck rolled over on the Great Northern Highway, about 75km east of Fitzroy Crossing.

Fitzroy Crossing police were called to the accident about 9pm on Friday.

It is understood the driver of the cattle truck was shaken but not injured.

The triple trailer truck was carrying about 160 to 180 head of cattle when it is believed one trailer may have swayed off the edge of the road, causing the driver to take corrective action.

However, he was unable to regain control of the truck and trailers, resulting in the cabin and all three trailers rolling.

Local people and truck drivers stopped to assist.

It is believed about 20 of the cattle died as a result of the crash, either on impact, or had to be euthanized by attending police officers.

This number may have since increased as local station owners continued to assist with cattle management after the police presence was no longer required.

The crash scene was cleared by about 5.30am-6am and there are no further traffic delays.
