Centre to boost literacy skills in Broome
A new training centre designed to help Broome students develop literacy skills will be established at Notre Dame University.
The Behind the Screen Training Classroom building project, funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, is an initiative between the Committee of the Reading Recovery Programme and University of Notre Dame Broome.
Reading Recovery is an early intervention program providing extra support to students struggling with reading and writing. The training room will feature an installed one-way mirror to help train teachers and enable them to observe tutoring with students.
On November 14, teachers, representatives from the Department of Education, Catholic Diocese of Broome and the Broome community attended a clearing of country and blessing ceremony to launch the project.
St Mary’s College Reading and Recovery teacher Julia Durack said it was exciting to have access to a bigger classroom to enhance the learning environment for students and teachers.
Notre Dame Broome deputy vice-chancellor Lyn Henderson-Yates said the construction of the classroom was important for the Broome campus as the university continued to focus on building for the future.
Ms Henderson-Yates said the classroom would be a valuable resource for the Catholic Education Office, the Aboriginal Independent Community Schools and the Department of Education WA.
“It will play a vital role in the training of teachers, especially for those schools engaged in the Reading Recovery Programme,” she said.
