Children cherish fine literary donations

Broome Advertiser

In a show of goodwill from one not-for-profit organisation to another this Christmas, Magabala Books donated more than 20 children’s books to Broome Aboriginal childcare centre Jalygurr-Guwan.

Magabala gives collections to a local indigenous non-profit organisation each year and was excited to choose Jalygurr-Guwan for its commitment to providing quality early childhood services to Broome’s indigenous community.

Magabala Books marketing manager Nic Murray said while Magabala was non-profit and limited financially, it was focused on giving back to the community especially at Christmas.

“It was just beautiful to see the children squeal with delight on opening their presents and reading all the Magabala books with their carers and Magabala staff.

“It doesn’t get much better than that,” Ms Murray said.

Jalygurr-Guwan co-ordinator Heather Lee thanked Magabala Books.

“What a wonderful contribution these books will make to our centre,” Ms Lee said.

“I can’t thank Magabala enough for the generosity they have shown our kids and centre.”

Jalygurr-Guwan was formed in 1989 by a group of mothers attending the Mirdi Marlu playgroup.

As more of Broome’s Aboriginal women entered the workforce, the group identified a need for an Aboriginal day care service.

Jalygurr-Guwan became one of 37 multi-functional Aboriginal children’s services designed to meet the social and developmental needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
