Club seeks new players
The Broome Softball Club is training hard, with the committed group of local women ready to hit a home run at the North West Championships.
Interest in the sport peaked in 2013, with Broome hosting the competition that brought teams from as far south as Carnarvon and as far north as Kununurra.
The Broome team won the encouragement trophy at last year's competition in Port Hedland and are ready to travel to Karratha in September to compete again.
Solid numbers have been turning up for training, but the club is appealing for more new faces of any experience and ability level to give the sport a swing.
Club president Karen Dudley said softball was a fun and social sport and newcomers were welcome.
"We currently have some really talented individuals on our team, with a selected 15 players that are able to compete in the championships in September, along with our two male coaches that have attended the tournaments each year," she said.
The team's efforts are largely self-funded, with a quiz and auction night set to take place to raise much-needed funds on July 25 and sponsors are also being sought out.
Dudley said the club was looking for volunteers to help run T-ball sessions for local youngsters.
Players train every Tuesday at 5pm at Gantheaume Point, and it is hoped a local competition can be started.
