Commissioner makes trip for Kimberley cops

WA Police commissioner Karl O’Callaghan made a special trip to Broome last week to pay tribute to police officers during an awards presentation.

Commissioner O’Callaghan changed his itinerary to attend the ceremony and personally congratulate officers for their dedicated service.

A group of 18 police officers were awarded for their individual lengths of service with special commendations, medals and certificates.

Mr O’Callaghan praised officers for their “professional and continued dedication” and demonstration to go “above and beyond the call of duty”.

The commissioner also acknowledged the officers’ families for continually supporting them in their role.

District superintendant Mick Sutherland said the commissioner’s visit meant “a lot personally” for officers.

Among the achievers was senior sergeant Jason Van Der Ende who was awarded a 15-year police medal, and senior constable Grant Edgar for his 25-year milestone in the force.

Senior constable Edgar, a forensics specialist with the disaster victim identification team said the award meant a lot and signified the friendships he’s formed over the years.

Mr Edgar said his work involved a lot of “death and destruction” but found his job “very humbling” in supporting victims and families.

Robert Clark of Bidyadanga station and Jim Cave of Broome received a 35 year clasp, Thomas Stafford and Allan Tan Wei of Broome received a 20-year service medal, Karl Kapiteyn and David Berry received a 15-year medal, Daniel Colman, Darren Connor and Debra Mitchell were rewarded with a 10-year medal, and Wayne Davies and Christopher Holley received a five year senior constable bar. Geoffrey Stewart received a Comm Medal for Excellence.

Meanwhile the Kimberley district farewelled Rob Neesham, Paul Nelen and Karl Kapiteyn.
