Competitive field makes for great racing

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Broome Motocross held its second round of the 2013 season late last month, with a competitive and exciting day of racing for all involved.

Forty-five riders from Broome, Port Hedland and Derby took to the track on Sunday, May 26, with close races across the divisions.

In the junior section, Nate Hogan of Port Hedland took out first in the 50cc class, while James Heil won the 65cc division. Derby’s Kurtis Bickerton prevailed in the 85cc class, while Jackson Smith was victorious in the 125cc grade.

The senior competition was fiercely contested, with a number of rivalries making for close races.

Despite strong competitors from Port Hedland and Derby, it was two Broome riders in Cameron Shulzes and John Russell who battled it out for top spot. In the end Shulzes took first place.

In the veteran and clubman division, Rob McGregor and Clayton “Wildman” Brown were neck-and-neck all day. However, in the end experience and patience shone through, with McGregor coming up trumps.

There was a good turnout in the junior quads division. Branden Quintrell put pressure on State number one Jack Wilcox, but good riding and consistency saw Phillip Lockart take the points.

In the senior quads, Scott Quintrell overcame opposition from Troy Gibson, winning by four points.

Unseasonal rain meant the track needed a lot of preparation, and as such the club was quick to thank sponsors Ocean & Earth Training, Roebuck Roadhouse and Kirks Earthmoving for their assistance.

The next round takes place on Sunday, June 23, with racing starting at 9am.
