Crocodile warnings
As the wet season gradually rolls across the Kimberley sky, resident crocodiles are on the move and are potentially aggressive and protective of their nests.
Department of Environment and Conservation acting district wildlife officer Ben Ansell said the agency had recently received many reports of crocodiles on the move – something he said was quite normal for this time of year.
Mr Ansell said residents and visitors should be aware of the sporadic presence of saltwater crocodiles in waterways around Broome, including Roebuck Bay and associated river and creek systems.
He said the public should remain vigilant when approaching water systems where crocodiles were, or suspected to be, located. Around Broome, the department puts out temporary crocodile warning signs to alert visitors as to the presence of saltwater crocodiles.
“Saltwater crocodiles nest over the wet season, from November to May,” Mr Ansell said.
“During the breeding season saltwater crocodiles become very aggressive and protective of their nests – therefore saltwater crocodiles should always be considered dangerous and should not be approached.” The wildlife officer said the saltwater crocodile was classed as specially protected fauna in WA.
