Cyclones send audiences into a spin

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

The Broome Cyclones had State capital audiences in a spin last week, as the Kimberley team excelled at the WA State Titles in Perth.

After a solid showing at the tournament last year, a dedicated contingent of local players has been training together since May ahead of the competition.

With five juniors on the team to complement the experienced players, the Broome side won four of their eight games over an action-packed weekend.

The Cyclones came up against some tough opposition in the early matches of the tournament but rallied to record victories over Esperance, Bunbury and two Perth-based teams.

They finished the weekend in ninth place, while Bec Lorraine and Seth Lovell landed the MVP female and male prizes for the entire competition.

To top off an excellent team performance, the Broome cohort were handed the Spirit of the Game award; an accolade reserved for the side that plays with the most sportsmanship and positivity in a sport that has no umpires.

Cyclones captain Bec Lorraine said the team were very happy with their performance and that the improved showing highlights the development of the sport in Broome.

She also thanked the Department of Sport and Recreation for their financial support, which went towards the cost of travel for the junior members of the team.

WA Ultimate executive officer Anna Haynes said the Broome team acquitted themselves well and that their return to compete in Perth again in the future was something to look forward to.
