Dramatic flood rescue

Broome Advertiser

A family — including a five year old child — was plucked from rising floodwaters by a police helicopter in the Kimberley last week.

About 11am last Thursday, a man told Fitzroy Crossing based officers a friend had texted him she saying was stranded, with her family, on the Bayulu-Yakanarra access road, about 35km south of Bayulu Community.

A police spokesman said the family had been travelling towards the Yakanaara Community when their vehicle became trapped by floodwaters.

The helicopter was positioned on the edge of the floodwater and used to collect the four children and two parents one at a time and drop them with waiting officers.

The family, which included three boys aged five, nine and 10 and a 17-year-old girl, was rescued to safety by 3.30pm.
