Dugongs have their sights on Country Week success

After success in the competition in 2012, Broome is again taking part in the Country Week cricket carnival in Perth.

The Dugongs went through the tournament undefeated last year and took out C section.

A step-up to B section this year promises to be a stern challenge.

The squad is made up of the best-performing cricketers from the four local teams, with representatives from Roebuck Bay, Mangrove, Dirty Dozen and Wanderers clubs participating.

The tournament has 60 teams from all over WA battling it out for the silverware.

The finals will be played at Murdoch University this weekend.

Dugongs vice-captain Dan Nicholas thanked the club’s sponsors for their financial backing, which has ensured a fully-funded trip to Perth and he feels the Broome side have the personnel to excel.

“Our team will be led by Dean Holder who brings a vast amount of skill and knowledge to the team. His experience on turf wickets will be valuable,” Nicholas said.

“The likes of Dean, Joel Unicomb and Justin Thompson have the ability to provide us with a solid foundation at the top of the order and the experienced middle order of Pat De Souza, Steven Thompson, reigning Cricketer of the Year Joel Handford and myself will look to guide the team to formidable totals.

“We also have excellent bowlers, with the swing and pace of Dom Tracey and Jarrod Withers complemented by spinners James Carpenter, Justin Crowley, Scotty Gardner and Phil Thompson.
