Duo ready to battle pros

It’s been voted the best Pro-Am golf event in the State in the past three years, and runner up in the other two, but it is easy to see why golfers love Broome’s annual Pro-Am event.

Broome Golf Club professional Billy Minns reckons it is the great hospitality provided by the local club, combined with good weather and an excellent course, which the professionals who vote on the awards appreciate.

“It’s the last event of the tour so the pros really enjoy it, a bit of a holiday to finish the year,” he said.

This year will be the biggest event yet, with 46 professionals playing, with a combined field of more than 120, with Minns and the golf club’s new trainee apprentice Adam Elwell to represent Broome.

“There’s a bit of rivalry between the two of us – hopefully the boss will beat the apprentice.”

He said spectators were welcome on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the event, however the Sunday would be the most entertaining, with the professionals playing by themselves.

Up-and-coming professionals Nick Cullen, Gary Simpson, Josh Younger and James Carr will all travel to Broome for the event.

Three greens were upgraded over wet season for Pro-Am and opened three weeks ago.

The competition kicks off with a sponsor’s day on Thursday, June 23, while pros play local amateurs on Friday and Saturday, before the pros’ final day on Sunday, June 26.
