Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Looma Eagles staked their claim as a real contender for the West Kimberley Football League title last Saturday, with an excellent 11.15 (81) to 9.6 (60) win against reigning premiers Cable Beach.

The Eagles made it two wins from two games after beating Broome Bulls on the opening weekend, and now sit on top of the ladder as the only undefeated side.

In an end-to-end encounter, Looma edged out Cable Beach with a strong last quarter, with the game neck-and-neck all the way through.

Cameron Clancy was on the mark for the Eagles in the first quarter with two goals, while Cable Beach captain Brad Angus and Sonny Dann replied.

Looma took a slender 2.6 (18) to 2.1 (13) lead into the first break.

The sides continued to trade goals in the second quarter, with Vernon Dann (2), Aaron Birch and Ben McKenzie all

kicking goals for Cable Beach.

Impressive Looma forward Deromitt Wilson kicked two goals for his side, with Vincent Skinner and Jefferson Pindan also contributing six-pointers. Looma led 6.6 (42) to 6.4 (40) at half-time.

The Eagles missed a number of chances to add six points to their tally in the third quarter, but Wilson did kick two more goals for his side. Jo Dann, Nathan Green and Lucas Achee kept Cable Beach in touch with six-pointers, with Looma taking a one-point lead into a dramatic last quarter 8.12 (60) to 9.5 (59).

However, the Eagles dominated possession and territory in the last 20 minutes, limiting Cable Beach to one point in the quarter and kicking three goals of their own.

A long-range effort from Sonny Dann ricocheted off the Looma goalpost at the start of the quarter, suggesting Cable Beach’s luck may have run out.

Lewis Broome and Jason Crusoe were on target to seal a momentous 11.15 (81) to 9.6 (60) win for Looma.

Cable Beach president Mick Albert said his side will look to come out of the defeat stronger in their next fixture.

Cable Beach take on Broome Saints at 11am on Saturday at Haynes Oval, while Looma would look to make it three from three against Peninsula Bombers.

Bombers recorded their first win of the season against Bidyadanga Emus, winning 12.7 (79) to 9.15 (69).

Raphael Hunter kicked three goals for the winning side.

Timmy and Courtney Cox both contributed two sixpointers.
