Esperance outing for Broome pair

Two of Broome’s brightest soccer stars have excelled at the Country Week under-13 competition in Perth for adopted team Esperance.

With Broome not possessing the funding to send a representative team to the tournament in the State capital, Samuel Lynch and Lachlan Bonner got the chance to play for the south coast town – and excelled.

Such was the pedigree of the Broome pair, Samuel was named as Esperance’s MVP for his contributions in defence, while Lachlan ended the competition with six goals in an excellent display.

Esperance coach Pia Drew thanked the Broome Soccer Association for loaning them such wonderful boys, but a request to keep them was denied by the players’ mothers.

Broome Soccer Association president Sarah Mullineux said the pair were a credit to the Kimberley club.

“It’s wonderful to see these young soccer players provided with an opportunity to progress their skills further by joining State-based competitions,” she said.

“Young stars like Lachlan and Sam are role models and provide inspiration to their peers to be the best they can be.”

Broome youth coach Mike Doyle said he hoped the boys achievements would lead to a local team making the trip to Perth next season.

“Sam and Lachlan have made history by being the first two Broome players to be part of the Football West Country Week,” he said.

“Their outstanding achievements down in Perth will hopefully pave the way for a Broome team to participate in next year’s tournament.”
