Event a runaway success

Broome Advertiser

In only its second year, the Be Active BRAC 2 Beach Fun Run has consolidated its position as one of Broome’s favourite sporting events with almost 170 participants taking to the start line on Sunday.

With both 10km and 5km courses, the event was designed to cater for every member of the family and all fitness levels, and while the emphasis was on participation and fun, the event also proved highly competitive.

At the pointy end of the field, in the 10km event the first entrant across the line at the Cable Beach Amphitheatre was

Oskar Booth with a time of 35:08:58, closely followed by Will Withers just 17.6 seconds behind, and Lloyd Reidy a further one minute and 12 seconds back. In fourth place was the first junior, Joe Handscombe, in 38:36:25.

The first woman across the line, and eighth overall, was Katy Duffield in 40:00:85, followed by Liz Wicks in 42:44:78 and Donna Dixon in 44:12:49.

In the 5km event, Brennan MacKensie crossed the line in a time of 21:40:81 to take the win, ahead of Rich Hall in 22:10:05 and in third place was leading female Vicki Cobby in 22:12:15.

The team prize went to the Broome Tri Club which had 18 entrants in the event.

BRAC centre manager Ian Chester said the support for the event was very encouraging.

“It’s great that so many members of the Broome community, along with plenty of visitors to the town, turned out to challenge themselves in this healthy, fun event,” he said.

“The success is also a tribute to the Shire of Broome staff who organised the event and then volunteered on the day to ensure everything ran smoothly.”
