NICOLA KALMARBroome Advertiser

The West Australian’s award winning travel editor and novelist Stephen Scourfield will duet with books editor William Yeoman for a special musical reading performance as part of this year’s Broome writers’ festival.

Corrugated Lines: A Festival of Words will return to the town for a second year to deliver another slice of literary feasts for language lovers, readers and storytellers.

Initiated by Backroom Press and fuelled entirely by the passion of enthusiastic volunteers and organisers, the festival was a huge success last year presenting an array of diverse and engaging literary events for locals and tourists to enjoy.

This year promises to be just as big, with a number of authors including award-winning Australian writer Mark Greenwood on the guest list.

Greenwood is an author with a passion for history and legends.

He has twice received the West Australian Premier’s Award for his works The Legend of Moondyne Joe and The Legend of Lasseter’s Reef.

This year, he will celebrate the highly anticipated release of his latest work, Jandamarra.

Stephen Scourfield and William Yeoman will present a musical piece based on Scourfield’s latest novel As the River Runs.

Backroom Press chairwoman Sudha Coutinho said after the success of the inaugural festival, organisers got together and decided to host another event.

“We got great feedback from people who came along but also from volunteers and organisation groups,” she said.

“We had to have fun (doing it) because no one was paid for it … I’m really excited for people to see it again.”

Ms Coutinho said organisers were not want necessarily aiming to make the festival bigger this year, other than to make it enjoyable for readers and writers.

Among the line-up of scheduled events will be a workshop from Backroom Press on how to write better and a self- publishing workshop at Broome Public Library.

In addition, Ms Coutinho said organisers were planning to expand the concept of enabling people throughout the Kimberley to access a few online projects so they can be part of the festival.

Corrugated Lines: A Festival of Words will be held from August 9 to 11.
