Firm friends reunited

ANIA MASZKOWSKIBroome Advertiser

Lady the dog has returned to her relieved owners after a three month adventure which saw her travel and estimated 120km.

Brenda Shaw and her partner Len frequently travel Cape Leveque Road to their friends’ block in Carnet Springs, to get away from the town’s hustle and bustle, and they take Lady along.

Usually, on those trips, they would stop just out of Broome for a quick break to let Lady out and when it was time to keep driving again, she would jump back in the car and sit quietly in the back for the remainder of the journey.

But in September last year, Brenda’s daughter, Leanne, passed away and after the funeral, rather than going to the block with Len, Brenda decided to stay in Broome.

Len and Lady set off as usual, stopping 30km out of town. But when it was time to keep going, Lady refused to get back in the car, running off and disappearing into the bush.

Len searched for the dog, calling out her name, but eventually he reluctantly gave up and drove to the block, another 70km away.

But, almost three months after Lady disappeared, Brenda received a call from a friend, telling her she had been spotted at the Country Downs Station.

When found, the only signs of her adventure were her matted coat, somewhat thinner appearance and worn out pads on her paws.

However, other than that, she was safe and well and delighted to see her owners.
