Fixture sees inmates and Pearlers mix

The Broome Pearlers, the local masters football club, played a competitive but fun fixture against inmates from Broome prison last month.

The Pearlers are a group of players aged over 35, who come together to mix moderate fitness with the social aspect of the sport.

After an inter-club scratch match earlier in June, the game against the Broome prisoners was designed to be beneficial to all.

The prisoners were unable to field a complete team, and inmates were split evenly between two teams made up of Pearlers players.

In the end a close game ensued, with one goal separating the sides in a contest played in a sporting spirit. Darren Neindorf captained the winning side, while Matthew Sears was voted fairest and best after an impressive performance in the victorious midfield.

Pearlers president Frank Speed put on a good showing for the defeated team, starting in the backline and ending up at full forward.

Pearlers vice-president Duncan Thorn said the run out was worthwhile and thoroughly enjoyed by all players.

“With the closest masters side to Broome based in Newman, it is great to get a game close to home,” he said.

The Pearlers’ next game will be played against Derby prisoners at the end of July.
