Flag contenders tune up for finals with wins
The top-four teams in the West Kimberley Football League all recorded victories last weekend, with the last round of fixtures before the finals series taking place this Saturday.
Broome Saints continued their strong recent run of form on Friday night at BRAC, beating local rivals Towns 17.13 (115) to 1.4 (10).
The defeated side fought valiantly in the first half, but the superior Saints took the spoils at a canter.
Cable Beach showed no mercy against a fading Broome Bulls side at Haynes Oval on Saturday, winning 17.11 (113) to 4.5 (29).
Scott Clark continued his fine form in front of goal, while youngster Brayden Hackett also looked sprightly in the victors’ attack. Hayden McLeod did what he could in the Bulls’ midfield.
Derby Tigers recorded the biggest win of the weekend against bottom side Peninsula Bombers, prevailing 24.13 (157) to 3.5 (23).
Finally, Looma Eagles beat a plucky Bidyadanga Emus side 12.7 (79) to 8.18 (66) in the game of the round.
Bidyadanga will rue not turning a host of their behinds into majors. If they had been more accurate with their goal kicking the result may well have been different.
The last round of fixtures this Saturday should be a formality, as the top four for the finals are already determined.
In the pick of the round, Cable Beach and Saints play the last game of the regular season in a match-up that could potentially be replayed at some point in the finals series.
