The light will shine on sports in Broome – thanks to a $420,000 handout.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the Shire of Broome was one of the successful recipients to win a slice of more than $17 million available for similar projects.

Council will receive the money to upgrade floodlighting at the Peter Haynes Reserve under the latest Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) grants round.

Offered annually through the Department of Sport and Recreation, the grants for projects costing more than $150,000 are designed to contribute to the construction or improvement of grass roots sporting and recreation facilities around Western Australia.

“I congratulate the Shire of Broome and look forward to seeing these grants make a big difference to the many groups that use the oval, through both the improvements to the facilities and the benefits that come from increasing participation in sport and recreation,” Mr Waldron said.

“This contribution will assist our local clubs to provide facilities for sport and recreation and support a range of other initiatives encouraging people to be more active.

“These funds help create a more vibrant community of sport and recreation clubs which undoubtedly contributes to the health and wellbeing of the entire community.”

President of Cable Beach Football Club Mick Albert stated that the grant would be welcomed by the Broome sporting community and offer alternative facilities for a range of sports.

“CBFC use the facilities at BRAC to train in the evenings, however with the growth in popularity of sport in Broome the pitches can be quite congested with other teams and sports looking to meet there also.

Improved floodlighting at Haynes Oval will hopefully offer another option for sports clubs in the town to utilise, which is positive news,” he said.

A total of 55 community sport and recreation projects were funded across the state.

Thirty-five of the successful projects (51.6% of the funding) are in regional WA, totalling $9,135,778.

The 2013/2014 CSRFF February small grants round for projects under $150,000 opens on 1 February 2013. If you’re in regional WA, contact your nearest Department of Sport and Recreation office at www.dsr.wa.gov.au/contact.
