Girls seek out fresh meat

Fishnets, skirts, roller skates and girls with attitude. That’s what Broome is in for this weekend when the Red Dirt Roller Dollz go on their Fresh Meat recruitment drive.

With the first group of skaters having learnt the ropes and increased their roller derby skills, the league is ready to accept an intake of new skaters, who are known in the derby world as “Fresh Meat”.

Roller Derby is the fastest growing sport in the world. It is known for its stylised macabre pin up girl persona, with Vicious Viccus, Delta Hoodlum, Lisa Lashes and SpiniFX Fury being just a few of the creatively violent names chosen by the girls of Broome’s first roller derby league.

It’s not all about the image though, as the actual game of roller derby takes a lot of skill, strength and endurance, as well as knowledge of the very detailed rules. It is not only a vigorous contact sport, but extremely competitive and team orientated.

Roller Derby is not just for girls either. The league has a need for both males and females to be involved as referees, coaches and non-skating officials. There are already a few guys in the league training up to be refs, and looking forward to sending some girls to the sin bin.

With the drilling of coach Dob Zom-B and the help of the more experienced skaters, new members will see their skate skills increase in no time, even if they have never been on skates before. All shapes, sizes and skill levels are encouraged to come and check it out.

As part of the Fresh Meat drive, the Red Dirt Roller Dollz are holding a demo night at 6pm on Friday, January 25, in the indoor stadium at BRAC where people can come along to see a mock scrimmage, and learn a bit more about the sport. For more information, email freshmeat.rdrd@y7mail.com.
