Golfers scramble in a bid to secure place at State regional qualifier
Broome Golf Club held its first Holden Scramble tournament of the year on Saturday, June 8, with two local teams qualifying for the State regional qualifier.
One hundred and eight players took part in the four-person Ambrose event, in what was a scintillating day of golf.
A team comprising Darren Cobby, Justin Wiebrecht, James Ferguson and David Atkinson recorded the best net score for the day of 56 1/8. The second-placed outfit of Tony Cooling, Matt Algie, Jack Oddy and Lee Hallam were in close pursuit, and took the runners-up place with a net score of 56 7/8.
Broome Golf Club professional Billy Minns will now join the winning team to make a contingent of five for the regional qualifier in Perth, with trainee professional Adam Elwell to play with the runners- up.
Minns said the event had a fantastic turnout, and it was a bonus to have four teams from Derby compete. The State qualifier will be played in October near Perth at Secret Harbour golf course, with competitors from all over WA looking to make it through to the national tournament.
The Australia-wide competition will be hosted at Twin Waters course in Sunshine Course in December.
A Broome team made it through to the Australian competition last year, finishing seventh in the nation, and as such there are high hopes locally this time round.
The next major tournament at the club will be the Broome Furnishings Pro Am, with 36 professionals from all over Australia travelling to the Kimberley to play alongside local golfers.
Stephen Dartnall, Andrew Evans, Tom Bond and last year’s winner Kim Felton are to be in attendance.
The Pro Am will be played between Thursday, June 27 and Sunday, June 30, for $35,000 prize money. For more information call the club on 9192 2092.
