Groups promote men’s health

NICOLA KALMARBroome Advertiser

Representatives from the Regional Men’s Health Initiative arrived in Broome last week to launch an alliance with a local organisation to reach out to more men in the Kimberley.

RMHI community educator Owen Catto and committee deputy chairman Bruce Thorpe met with Men’s Outreach Service Broome general manager Peter Mitchell to establish the alliance to help facilitate the RMHI program.

RMHI is delivered by Wheatbelt Men’s Health, a not-for-profit organisation formed to raise awareness of men’s wellbeing.

The organisation was formed in May 2002 and services regional WA. It provides a co-ordinated approach to promote men’s physical and mental health by helping the community and local groups to conduct health promotion and education activities.

Since last year, RMHI has expanded in the North West and representatives have toured the region delivering their advocacy work in shows and events in Kimberley towns.

Peter Mitchell said the alliance with RMHI was a way to broaden the demographics and reach out to people from different backgrounds.

Mr Catto said RMHI also promoted the Talk to a Mate message through their work and encouraged men to open up about their health.
