Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Racing Guantanamo stormed to the top of the Broome men’s soccer table last week following victory, while Barbarians got their first win for the season in convincing fashion.

Guantanamo, the champions from the 2012 campaign, were out for revenge against Meatworks following their 6-1 humbling in the corresponding fixture on the opening day of the season.

The champions showed their calibre with a 7-0 win over a depleted Meatworks, who were missing key figures through injury, suspension and unavailability.

The score was 3-0 at half-time, with Keith Anderson’s thunderous strike the pick of the goals.

Guantanamo dominated in the second half also, with forward Colm O’Leary netting a hat-trick. Niall O’Shea was voted as the best on ground, with his midfield partner Anderson also among the individual awards.

Francis Johnston’s tireless work rate saw him adjudged as Meatworks’ best, while youngsters Joe Handscombe and Dee Phensuk applied themselves well.

In the second game, Barbarians came back from a goal down to comprehensively beat Broome City 5-2.

Barbarians have improved steadily this season and built on a 4-4 draw with Meatworks from the week prior with a win here.

Matt McGuire had put Broome City in the lead from the penalty spot; however, Barbarians rallied and dominated proceedings for the rest of the game. Matt Sheridan continued his goal-scoring form by hitting the back of the net once more, while Quinton Fortune also grabbed a brace.

Guantanamo are now on top of the ladder with nine points, while Broome City are second with six points. Meatworks and Barbarians are tied on four points after four games.
