Harriers dash to add cash to Matt’s operation fund

They may look a little eccentric and enjoy a beer or more, but the social bunch who make up the Broome Hash House Harriers have proved they have hearts of gold after raising money for a good cause.

The local group of Hash House Harriers donated more than $500 for young Filipino local Matt Saraza who has cerebral palsy and requires a vital operation.

Broome Hash member Josef Pagel said the group decided to put money into a local cause last year and was aware of Matt’s plight.

“We know the family and we thought it would be a good idea,” he said. “Every time we have a run, there is a small fee which goes towards the cause.” After being born prematurely, seven-year-old Matt was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain swelling. His family are trying to raise about $20,000.
