Headland back to his best with a 10-goal haul

Broome Saints got back to winning ways last Saturday in the West Kimberley Football League, beating a young Towns side comprehensively 23.14 (152) to 4.4 (28).

Saints have been up and down this season and were beaten heavily by Broome Bulls the week prior.

However, the result was never in doubt here, as the side in green and gold were in the ascendancy from the offset.

Saints were buoyed by the return of Des Headland, who missed the defeat to Bulls. The former Fremantle Docker led the victorious attack to finish with 10 goals.

Reece Eades kicked four goals for the winning team, while Michael Farmer, Craig Sampi, Kevin McKenzie and Christopher Oakley also contributed majors.

Towns are in a transitional period and having a tough season, however the defeated team did not let their heads drop regardless of the one-sided scoreline.

Jack Pascoe and Damien Crispin kicked goals for Towns, while Matt Reen and Matt Smith did what they could from the backline despite the Saints onslaught.

Saints coach Neil Bourke said he was glad his side stamped out recent inconsistency and got back to winning.

“We had a hiccup the week before and we needed to go back to the drawing board in training,” he said.

“A tough session on Wednesday night helped, and we moved the ball quickly in this game.

“The midfield and backline hit their targets and provided the forwards with a lot of opportunities to kick goals. We are happy with the win.

“Towns, to their credit, didn’t throw in the towel and they were competitive all day.”

The WKFL takes a break this weekend in a bye round.
