Humpback migration unites whale lovers

AMY WILLIAMSBroome Advertiser

Hundreds of people joined hands on Sunday celebrating the arrival of the world’s largest population of humpback whales to the Kimberley on their annual trip to breeding grounds near Camden Sound.

Organisers of the event Annabelle Sandes and Richard Costin of Kimberley Media said they were thrilled 529 people were part of an aerial photograph on Cable Beach. Ms Sandes said it was the third time they staged the event and it was definitely the biggest.

“Every year awareness grows that there is a really important population of whales here and people are getting excited about it because they are seeing them here,” she said.

Ms Sandes said people were now seeing pods of the humpback whales from Gantheaume Point along the Kimberley coast.

She said organisers hoped next year’s photo event would be even bigger.
