Kimberley Girl powers ahead with inspiration

NICOLA KALMARBroome Advertiser

Inspiring indigenous role model and leadership program Kimberley Girl has got off to a flying start this year following the success of its offshoot program Pilbara Girl.

Sixteen-year-old Lisa Marie Rodd, a Karratha resident, was crowned the 2012 winner of the event, which is now in its third year.

Goolarri Media chief operations officer Kira Fong said Pilbara Girl was rapidly gathering momentum thanks to increasing support from the community.

This year, ten girls aged 16-24 took part in the program and the workshops in Port Hedland, Karratha and Roebourne held in July.

Meanwhile, Ms Fong said the 2012 Kimberley Girl competition was well underway, with one day workshops being held in communities like Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek.

Now in its ninth year, the search is on for a face that reflects the “diverse culture, history and heritage” of the unique Kimberley region.

With the first heat fast approaching next month, Ms Fong said now was the time for girls considering taking part to register their interest. Volunteers are also encouraged to get in touch to help promote the program. The first two-day workshop will be held in selected communities from September 3-14.

The Kununurra and Halls Creek workshop will be held from September 17-21, followed by an event on September 21. Derby and Fitzroy Crossing workshops will be held from September 24-28, with the Derby and Fitzroy heat on September 28. Broome workshops will be held from October 1-5, followed by an event on October 5. Kimberley Girl finals workshops will be held in Broome from October 8-12, with the final event on October 12.
