Aboriginal leader Ken Riddiford has stepped down as chief executive of the Kimberley Stolen Generation Aboriginal Corporation after 18 months at the helm.

Mr Riddiford was due to leave Broome last week and return to Queensland.

Speaking to theBroome Advertiser ahead of his departure, Mr Riddiford said although he was sad to leave town, he was proud to end on a high after seeing KSGAC move forward and become a nationally recognised organisation.

“When I came here, I saw the potential ... and the organisation had a lot to offer the Broome community, but also at a national scene,” he said.

“I talked about the Kimberley Stolen Generation being the jewel in the crown and it certainly has become that because lots of people across the nation know or have heard of KSG.”

Mr Riddiford said a highlight of his appointment was officially unveiling the newly renovated Broome building in February and seeing the centre reinvigorated as a place of pride for KSG members and the community.

“From a community perspective, we now have a place that belongs to the community that we can have functions at,” he said.

“It’s a place of belonging, it’s a place of community and I’ve always wanted the community to feel they can come in, have a cup of tea, talk to whoever’s there.”

A new chief executive is expected to be appointed in the coming weeks.
