The Peninsula Interschool Athletics Carnival took place last month, with four remote West Kimberley schools taking part in the event up on the Ardiyooloon Football Oval in One Arm Point.

Beagle Bay’s Sacred Heart School, La Grange Remote Community School in Bidyadanga, Christ the King School from Djarindjin/Lombadina and the One Arm Point Remote Community School all took part in the carnival.

Competitors ranged from 6 to 16- years-old, with disciplines such as long jump, 50m, 100m and 200m sprints, and 400m and 800m runs testing the youngsters’ athletic discipline.

La Grange, who travelled a 720km round trip to attend, were champions from 2012, and again were victorious with a combined total of 292 points. Hosts One Arm Point came second with 169 points, Christ the King ended up with 133 points and Sacred Heart School brought up rear on 121 points.

Garnduwa are longstanding supporters of the event. Kimberley regional program manager Mick Albert said the event was a success.

“All the kids had a fun day and enjoyed the competition,” he said. “Some of the talent on show was exceptional and athletics in the region is certainly growing stronger and stronger.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to the Ardiyooloon community for hosting the event and to the staff of all the schools who helped.”
