St Mary’s budding scientists are taking advantage of lots of practical experiments after the college’s science block had a dramatic makeover in time for the start of the semester.

The college now has three fully functioning science laboratories, thanks to funding by the Federal Government of funding Science and Language Centres for 21st Century Secondary Schools. St Mary’s College was one of 537 schools taking advantage of the government’s nationwide grants.

Science teacher Diane Latchman said the new labs were invaluable for enhancing student learning. “The new labs provide more room and more opportunities for studies. Each science lesson will now take place in the science labs, so that all students can have access to practical facilities.”

Year 12 student Alex Leake said the new labs provided additional equipment for individuals.

“It’s a lot bigger and we have extra stuff including new chairs and desks,” he said.

Fellow student Kathleen Bray said the new labs were suitable for big and small classes.

“It’s fantastic, and easier to work within big groups, or work as an individual,” she said.
