Lifeguards don trademark blue uniforms as they begin vital patrols
Broome lifeguards have returned to work in anticipation of increased tourist numbers in the town, with their first day back working at Cable Beach last Friday.
The lifeguards will be on hand throughout the dry season, with a presence on the beach from 9am to 4.30pm everyday until October 27.
Shire of Broome beach inspector Tim Trew said the lifeguards were in attendance to provide a rescue service when necessary, first aid and beach safety information.
“While we joke about it being the world’s best job, these are all highly trained, career lifeguards with experience around Australia and the world, who take their work very seriously,” he said.
“Broome’s own Rachael Gabb will be back patrolling her home beach after a season in Perth, and will join Chase Lurati (Phillip Island, Victoria), John Hardbattle (Brighton, SA), and junior lifeguard Wade Clark (Broome), who all worked on Cable Beach last year.
“It’s important that people follow the lifeguards’ instructions, swim between the flags and pay attention to warning signs.
“The lifeguards will also undertake stinger drags twice a day and will have irukandji information available at the beach.”
The Broome lifeguard team are donning their trademark blue uniforms again in 2013, and will be assisted by Broome Surf Life Saving Club volunteers from May.
