Lifeguards ready for patrols

NICOLA KALMARBroome Advertiser

Broome’s lifeguards have sported a new surf look for the start of patrol season, and hit the beach in cool blue uniforms last weekend.

Shire beach inspector Tim Trew returned to Cable Beach this season with a diverse team, including Zane Jones from the Sunshine Coast, Chase Lurati from Victoria, Tony Benfield of New South Wales and Broome lifeguard Rachael Gabb.

Mr Trew said this season’s patrolling lifeguards brought invaluable knowledge with them. “The lifeguards are from around Australia and contribute a lot of skills and experience, including international experience,” he said.

The lifeguards’ new uniforms are identical to those worn by Bondi Beach lifeguards.

Broome’s lifeguards will be on patrol from April to October 31, stationed between the red-andyellow swimming-area flags from 9am to 4.30pm each day.

They will be on-hand to provide first aid and beach information safety to beach-goers.

This year, the lifeguards will work with and mentor Broome Surf Life Saving Club members. The club takes up Sunday patrols from May.

Mr Trew said the message for beach-goers was to swim between the flags and check all signs for important notifications.
