Mango miracles take the biscuit at festival

A collaborative Kimberley dish featuring kangaroo and emu with a mango salsa ticked all the judges’ boxes at the Mango Festival’s Great Chefs of Broome competition, presented by the Lions Club.

Cable Beach Club chef Keshab Chhetri was crowned the winner with his kangaroo roulade and spicy mango salsa, followed by Clifton Mamis from the Mercure and Giles Bailey from the Old Zoo Café.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Broome Mango Festival, and showcased an array of talent – proving once again Broome’s locals understand just what it takes to create a mango masterpiece.

Entrants for the Great Bartenders of Broome provided an entertaining night with their concoctions.

Isaac Beales from the Old Zoo Cafe was crowned bartender of the year, with Andrew Fletcher from Cable Beach Club announced as the first runner-up, while Josaia Skewes from Eco Beach Resort was the second runner-up. The door prize was won by Amanda Southern, who was visiting from Perth.

The public arrived bright and early on Saturday morning to sample homemade delights in the mango jam, chutney and cakemaking contest, held by the Lionesses Club.

In the jams category, Kim Eastough won the people’s choice award, while Elizabeth Vickery was the choice for the guest judges.

For a consecutive year, Beverley Long was crowned the people’s choice winner for her chutney, while Kristie Parker wowed the judges with her creation.

Mandy Cahill clinched the most public votes in the cakes category, with Michelle Plant scooping the judges’ vote for her homemade treat.

In the children’s cake category, Grace Strain was announced the winner, alongside Lyndsay, Tamzyne and Sarah Richardson for their team effort.
