R&B singer, songwriter and actress Jessica Mauboy, who starred in the recent hit film The Sapphires, will headline a free community concert in Derby next month.

The concert will be held at the West Kimberley Turf Club on Friday, November 30, and is expected to attract up to 2000 locals.

It will also be broadcast live around the Kimberley by community radio station, 6DBY.

Shire of Derby West Kimberley community development executive manager Brad Isbister said the Derby Freshfest event, sponsored by SmokeFree WA and HAWK now!, would not only feature a concert but also a healthy lifestyle expo.

“We are delighted to announce Ms Mauboy’s performance, as she is such as wonderful role model,” he said.

“Derby and its surrounding communities will be brought together in a positive, spirited and inclusive manner to promote community pride and deliver healthy lifestyle messages, and Jessica Mauboy is a fantastic inspiration and a sweetheart to the nation.”

Schools in the area are currently competing in an “impress your teacher” competition, which will give eight lucky school children the chance to meet the star.

The competition has been designed to highlight achievements in schools through sports, academic performance or attendance.

Activities at the expo will include a dance competition, with two lucky winners also given the chance to meet the singing star, giveaways, interactive healthy lifestyle information booths and food stalls.

The concert will start at 4pm, with Mauboy to be supported by Kimberley bands 42 Decibel and Trax. The event and its venue will be smoke, drug and alcohol free.

With the chance of rain always a consideration outdoors in Derby at this time of year, the event management team may relocate the concert to the adjacent recreation centre but have assured that, in any event, the show will go on.
