The Broome Shire will ask the transport minister to verify which organisation is responsible for maintaining the iconic Streeter’s Jetty.

At last week’s council meeting, the shire said it recognised the jetty as being adjacent to the Broome town site on the western side of Dampier Creek, which included Streeter’s Jetty.

However, the Broome Port Authority, supported by the Department of Transport responded, stating it was not responsible for maintaining the jetty.

Broome Port Authority chief executive Vic Justice said the jetty was the shire’s responsibility

“The shire owns the jetty, there’s no argument. They can’t get to it because of the privately owned land at the base of it,” he said.

The question of ownership and responsibility for the historical jetty is unresolved, but the shire said it would liaise with various departments to discuss funding options for preservation.

The issue of who is responsible for the jetty has been an ongoing debate between the shire and port authority.

The subject has been raised repeatedly in council meetings.
