New dog tale to make its mark in town

FLIP PRIORBroome Advertiser

Forget the Pilbara’s Red Dog, the Kimberley has two even more lovable canine characters for children to get to know and love.

On November 19, local publishing house Backroom Press will launch its newest title, Sid and Skipper go Mustering, at the Broome Courthouse Markets.

One of the stars may even turn up for the occasion.

Sid and Skipper are two Kimberley kelpies who live and work on a cattle station, and the book follows their adventures in mustering season.

Skipper, a silly young pup, continually tests the patience of the serious working dog, Sid.

When crisis strikes, the two are forced to put their differences aside and work as a team.

The book, aimed at primary school students, was conceived, written and illustrated by Heather Charlton, an artist and first-time author who worked at Yeeda Station. Backroom Press, founded by Pat Lowe, Susan Sickert and Joyce Hudson in 2006, was incorporated as a not-for-profit association in 2009 and is run by volunteers.

It was set up with the aim to educate the community through stories and themes drawn from the Kimberley region.

Spokeswoman Robyn Wells said Sid and Skipper fitted the bill perfectly, so the team worked with Charlton to develop her tale.

Charlton’s first-hand knowledge of station life, sense of humour and witty illustrations make for a lively outback adventure which children will love.

“She obviously had a great time up there and formed strong friendships … that’s why I think it’s so evocative, because it’s based on her actual experiences,” Ms Wells said.

Ms Wells said 3000 books would be printed in the first run and sold locally through the website at www.backroompress.com.au.
