Night markets cancelled due to races
The next night markets in Chinatown scheduled for Saturday June 22 have been cancelled because they would clash with the popular annual horse races in Broome.
Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the cancellation was regrettable but it did not want the event competing with the Broome Turf Club meeting and the Courthouse Markets.
“The inaugural night markets in May were a great success and demonstrated what can be achieved in Broome for both retailers and the community,” chamber executive officer Maryanne Petersen said.
“They also provided a benchmark for the event, which we feel we would not be able to meet on July 22 due to events scheduled that day — everyone will be going to the races.”
The night markets are designed to coincide with cruise ships visiting the town with late evening departures.
Ms Petersen said the next markets scheduled for October 6 would include improved lighting, more street music and more food options.
She said the chamber would still organise welcoming committees for early departure passengers on June 22 and July 3, and was in need of helpers.
“We are seeking community groups able to provide volunteers to participate,” Ms Petersen said. “In return, the chamber will make a generous donation to the group as part of its ongoing community support.”
For information ring Ms Petersen at the chamber on 9193 5553.
