Ninjas stretched all the way in final

MIKE DOYLEBroome Advertiser

Ninjas have won the inaugural Broome Soccer Association youth competition courtesy of a dramatic penalty shoot out, winning 6-5 against Blue Stretchers.

The nine-goal-a-game Ninjas looked to have confirmed their favourite status with two early goals from league top scorer Anthony Woods, but a goal from Jackson Cordingley restored the Blue’s hopes before the break.

Dean Thorsby equalised before Tank U-ten gave Ninjas the lead again. Another Thorsby strike late in the game sparked a tense finish.

The sides were locked at 3-3 at the end of normal time, with a penalty shoot out needed to decide a winner.

Enter Ninjas keeper Matthew Aristei, who pulled out two stunning saves, including the first of the sudden death penalties.

He then removed the gloves to blast home an unstoppable shot and send the title the way of Ninjas.

The undefeated Barbarians overcame a spirited Sporting Guantanamo 6-5 to win a second consecutive men’s title.

Sporting were massive underdogs going into the game.

Having snuck into the finals in fourth place, nobody expected them to trouble the league’s benchmark.

When Barbarian’s captain Alan Armstrong scored an own goal, the hint of an upset was in the air.

The score could have been greater were it not for the bravery of James MacNeil in the Sporting goal.

In the dying minutes Phil Sheridan had a chance to win it. His neat shot cracked off the post, denying the Oranges the lead.

With the clock counting down and penalties looming it was Armstrong who pounced on a loose ball and sealed the win.

Flying Nancys confirmed their women’s futsal dominance, beating FC Shamrocks 6-1.

The leagues all-time leading goalscorer, Alissa Byron, bowed out of the competition in style, scoring two and setting up another, but it was a terrific team effort that earned them the title.
