Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Students from 11 schools across the region descended on Broome last week in a bid to claim the glory of the Kimberley Cup.

The well-contested carnival had youngsters from all over the North West enjoy a range of sports, including volleyball, basketball, netball, indoor soccer, touch rugby and football.

Broome Senior High School ended up with the most comprehensive medal haul, claiming victory in four events.

St Mary’s College were in close pursuit, winning three titles, while Halls Creek and Kununurra both won two competitions apiece.

Others making the trip to Broome included schools from Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Kalumburu, Looma, One Arm Point, Wangkatjungka and Wyndam.

Broome Senior High School set the tone with victories in both the boys’ and girls’ volleyball competitions. They were also victorious in football and mixed netball.

St Mary’s College showed too much class for their opponents in the boys’ indoor soccer, and also lifted the netball and mixed basketball crowns.

Halls Creek were the dominant force in the individual basketball competitions, winning both the boys’ and girls’ events and showing incredible skills on the way.

Finally, Kununurra showed a slight of hand to win the touch rugby competition and were the top team in the girls’ indoor soccer tournament.
