Officers pedal goodwill

Bodies were battered but spirits were high as a peloton of police officers pedalled into Broome last week to complete a charity bike ride.

Thirty-eight riders and their support crew took part in this year’s 850km Karratha to Broome Bike Marathon for WA Police Legacy.

Now in its 23rd year, the gruelling event is Police Legacy’s biggest fundraiser in the State.

Supporters gathered at the Broome Surf Lifesaving Club last Thursday to cheer riders at the finish line.

Karratha event organiser Senior Constable Kelsie Green said this year’s ride had been a success.

“We had a good year with the wind,” she said.

“We had a little bit of wind coming into Broome that slowed us down … but we’ve done really well.”

Ms Green said she was once again overwhelmed by the tremendous support from organisers, volunteers and community representatives, as well as participants who put in the hard yards for a worthy cause.

“That’s what this ride is all about — support that we can give to our fallen brothers and sisters’ families and children they’ve left behind.”

WA Police Legacy manager Jill Willoughby said she was blown away by the efforts of people involved in the bike marathon.
