Page-turning fun as packs delivered

Broome Public Library partnered Broome Primary School last month to deliver special book packs to pre-primary students to help boost literacy skills.

Every Tuesday, the school runs a Deadly Readers’ Club in pre-primary, and parents are encouraged to attend and read with their child.

Staff, students and parents welcomed local librarian Jodi Neindorf on September 25 to present book packs to children as part of the Better Beginnings Plus program.

The program is an initiative of the State Library of WA and delivered throughout the State to build literacy skills in children from birth, through fostering a love of books and language. The program is sponsored by the State Government and Rio Tinto.

Since its inception in 2005, more than 150,000 WA families have received books and reading packs.

Teacher Deb Hannagan said the Deadly Readers’ Club started last year and had steadily grown thanks to greater participation from students and parents.

“It’s about involving children, parents and the community in a positive reading experience,” she said. Ms Hannagan said reading clubs not only offered a great learning environment, they also provided a launch pad for libraries and other agencies running literacy programs for youngsters.
